My understanding of Interior design terms -

Commercial Interiors
Commercial interior design refers to interior design in public spaces. Good commercial design can add value to a business or building or improve the space for those who spend time in it.
Modern contempory design is often used for corporate lobbies, offices and government buildings.
However, Traditional décor makes a space more comfortable and warm with the use of natural wood and country design styles.

-          VENTURA DESIGN

This commercial interior, designed by Arlene Mc Intyre of Ventura Design for The Golden Ball Gastro Bar in Kilternan, Dublin is a prime example of Traditional décor in a public space. I was drawn to this interior for multiple reasons.
The use of dark natural wood gives that warm feel to the the space, very fitting for a Bar/Restaurant area where people are encouraged to relax and spend time.
The stone work is incorporated in the design adds to the overall country feel of the pub, white painted wood adds a fresher, cleaner look. The use of spotlighting contributes to this as it reflected of the polished surfaces giving a slick effect.
The whole design is balanced with the use of colour, making this commercial interior a successful design in my opinion.
This design has contiributed to my understanding of commercial design and how it is so important to consider the use of the space, and how the space should feel before actually designing it. This was clearly done in the above source.

Detailing
Detailing is showing a small part of a construction at a larger scale to show small surface details like decorative elements.

These images clearly depict detailing in interior design, showing small parts of an interior space at a larger scale. By taking a section of an interior and focusing on it, we can see details we may have missed, or not fully appreciated in a full scale image. The use of detail in an interior scheme adds interest with the use of small decorative features often repeated to create a larger feature, such as the mouldings on the ceiling in the first image.
This contributed to my understanding of Detailing as the image it clearly shows the detail, the repetition of the decorative mouldings creates a pattern, if the moulding was just used once on the ceiling it would not have added such interest to the scheme.

Free hand Architectural drawing
Free hand architectural drawing is a technical drawing/sketch of a building. They are used by architects and others such as builders or interior designers for a number of purpose, to develop a design idea, to communicate ideas and concepts and to enable a builder to construct a design.

This image contributed to my understanding of free hand architectural drawing from an interior design point of view as it shows the plan of a building drawn up by an architect. This drawing clearly shows information relevant to an interior designer working alongside the architect on the building. Such as, layout of the building, positioning of doors, windows etc. and location of entrances and exits.
This particular free hand architectural drawing stood out to me as it is a clear, understandable drawing which I would consider easy to work with as an interior designer.

Hand Rendered Drawings
Rendering – means the process of formulating, adding colour, shading and texturing to an image.

Rendering is used in interior design sketches and Hand drawings to add interest to a drawing of a scheme and to give a more realistic understanding of the designer’s vision by showing the colours and textures they plan an incorporating into the design.
The above sources added to my understanding of this as the use of rendering shows the colours and textures planned to be used in the design. The image clearly shows the use of a polished wood flooring giving a greater understanding of the designer’s vision.
I was drawn to these hand rendered images as they have a very realistic feel to them. This gave me a greater understanding of the purpose of hand rendering.

Physical 3D model
A physical 3D model is a type of scale model – a physical representation of a structure built to study aspects of an architectural design or to communicate design ideas.

I was drawn to this particular physical 3D model as I found it extremely interesting. The use of different materials such as wood and glass clearly shows the designers vision for the space. It contributed to my understanding of the use of physical 3D models to communicate a design idea as I feel such a complex design such as this would be hard to communicate through drawings alone. Whereas with this single model you are able to see the design from any angel.
